Christians across Ethiopia celebrate Christmas

Addis Ababa, January 7, 2020 (FBC) – Ethiopian Christian faithful across the country celebrated Christmas (Gena), an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ.

Ethiopia follows the Julian calendar and celebrates Christmas on January 7th, while the rest of the world celebrates on 25th of December.

Christmas is one of the biggest holidays in Ethiopia.

In their Christmas messages issued yesterday, Ethiopian religious leaders called upon the faithful to give special place for the country’s peace.

The also urged all Ethiopians to avoid hatred and uphold their age-long culture of living in unity and unison.

Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed for his part stressed the need to celebrate the holiday by eliminating separation and divisions.

“The celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ is a holiday of unity which marks dissolution of separation and enmity,” the Premier said in his Christmas message.
