Commission sends 20,000 MT wheat to Tigray

Addis Ababa, February 17, 2021 (FBC) –The National Disaster Risk Management Commission said it is working jointly with WFP in delivering humanitarian aid to people in need of help in Tigray regional state.

Commission’s Head of Communications, Debebe Zewde, told FBC that 20,000 metric tons of wheat purchased by the government of Ethiopia had been delivered to the regional state.

The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) facilitated the procurement and transportation of the grain to the central warehouse located in the city of Mekelle, he said.

Debebe indicated that the Government of Ethiopia, in collaboration with other aid agencies, have intensified the delivery of relief aid to those in need in the regional state.

According to him, humanitarian assistance has been delivered to more than 2 million people so far and efforts are underway to reach more people.

Humanitarian food and nutrition supplies have reached in Adi Harush, Mai Aini, Mekelle and Shire sites, the communication head added.

Ethiopia had planned to buy a total of 300,000 metric tons of grain and so far, it has purchased 200,000 metric tons, Debebe said.
