Conflict-ridden hospitals in Amhara, Afar regions resume services: Ministry

Addis Ababa, May 9, 2023 (FBC) – Hospitals and health centers in Amhara and Afar regional states which were severely damaged during the conflict in the northern part of Ethiopia, have resumed services after recovery works, according to the Ministry of Health.

Coordinator of Rehabilitation of Damaged Health Facilities at the Ministry of Health, Doctor Ermias Deju said various service-providing facilities were damaged during the war in the north including the health facilities.

Hence, based on the special priority given by the government, rehabilitation activities have been carried out on the health facilities.

So far, some 40 hospitals in Amhara region and 2 hospitals in Afar region that were affected by the conflict have been rehabilitated and have resumed services under the rehabilitation program.

Of the 453 health centers which were damaged due to the conflict, some 448 have begun services after rehabilitation, he said, adding that out of the 46 health centers in Afar, 42 have also resumed services.

The government has spent more than 1.2 billion birr for the rehabilitation of these health facilities in the two regions, he added.

Stressing that the support will continue to enable the hospitals provide their respective services with full capacity, he said Addis Ababa based public hospitals have been contributing their part to realizing the rehabilitation of the damaged health facilities.
