EDRMC, UN appeal for urgent funding to support humanitarian aid activities in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, February 2, 2024 (FBC) – Chief Commissioner of National Disaster Risk Management of Ethiopia, Shiferaw Teklemariam and Ramiz Alakbarov, the UN Resident Humanitarian Coordinator in Ethiopia, issue a joint statement on urgent funding for humanitarian aid activities in Ethiopia.

According to the statement, areas severely impacted by drought and conflict, especially Ethiopia’s northern highlands, require urgent humanitarian assistance.

The drought is impacting several regions in Ethiopia, with a significant effect on vulnerable communities in the north, still recovering from the 2020-2022 conflict, the statement indicated.

Owing to government and donor support, 6.6 million people are receiving food and cash assistance through targeted efforts. Urgent additional resources are needed to rapidly scale up and sustain responses, especially in conflict-affected areas, the statement revealed.

Both EDRMC and the UN emphasized the need for prompt action within a limited timeframe to address humanitarian assistance needs and enhance response endeavors.
