Ethiopia, Japan-aided drinking water project launched in Jigjiga town

Addis Ababa, May 25, 2021 (FBC) – A project funded by the government of Japan and intended to be implemented by the International Labor Organization (ILO) has been launched in Jigjiga town of Somali Regional State on 24th May 2021.

The project is dubbed “Enhancement of Disaster Resilience through the Employment of Intensive Water Work in Jigjiga and Refugee Hosting Communities in Kebribeyah”.

The event was launched with the presence of high level officials including Agency for Refugees and Returnees Affairs (ARRA) Tesfahun Gobezay, UNHCR Country Representative Madam Ann Encontre, Japanese Ambassador to Ethiopia Ito Takako and ILO Director for Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia, Sudan and South Sudan Alexio Musindo.

Key regional stakeholder representatives, Agriculture Bureau Head of the Somali Region, Mayor of Jigjiga town and others took part in the event.

Following a presentation by the ILO technical team, the participants visited the location on the outskirts of Jigjiga town where the dam that is anticipated to benefit 200 households is going to be constructed.

The event was wrapped up by a courtesy visit to the Office of the Deputy President of Somali Region followed by a discussion with Mustefe Muhamed Omer and his Deputy Ebrahim where a brief introduction was made about the project and related matters.

The Deputy Chief assured the delegation of a continued support for the successful accomplishment of the project and other similar efforts towards strengthening co-existence and self-reliance of refugees and host communities.
