Ethiopia, Republic of Congo sign agreement to work together in aviation sector

Addis Ababa, April 26, 2024 (FBC) – Ethiopia and the Republic of Congo have entered into a bilateral agreement aimed at collaborating in the aviation sector.

The agreement was signed today by Alemu Sime, Ethiopia’s Minister of Transport and Logistics, and Honoré Sayi, the Minister of Transport, Civil Aviation & Merchant Navy of the Republic of Congo.

During the signing ceremony, Alemu Sime emphasized the pivotal role that air transport fulfills not only in national development but also in fostering crucial economic and interpersonal ties across Africa.

In light of this, Ethiopia has to date concluded air service agreements with 112 countries across all continents, according to the Ministry of Transport and Logistics.

It was highlighted that Ethiopia and the Republic of Congo maintain a longstanding diplomatic relationship and are characterized as amicable nations actively contributing towards the goals of of the African Union Agenda 2063. The two countries are said to be committed to advancing shared stances through cooperation within regional and continental organizations.

Honoré Sayi, in his statement, emphasized that the agreement inked today between the two nations will serve to bolster their bilateral ties. He highlighted that this accord will facilitate collaboration within the aviation industry and enables the realization of sector-specific objectives.

Sayi underscored that the agreement, which was initially in a preliminary stage of signing, now permits African airlines to operate within African airspace without constraints. This milestone has been achieved through the proactive efforts of the African Union, culminating in a comprehensive endorsement.

It is said that the agreement is anticipated to exert a substantial impact on enhancing economic, social, and diplomatic ties, given its lack of constraints on flight routes, destinations, traffic rights, aircraft types, participating airlines, and related matters.

Ethiopian Airlines currently operates seven weekly flights to the Republic of Congo, and this accord between the two nations is poised to fortify its operations to Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire. Furthermore, it is expected to foster a conducive environment for expanding its service footprint and capitalizing on additional market prospects.
