Ethiopia secures funding for its initiative to produce sustainable aviation fuel

Addis Ababa, November 24, 2023 (FBC) – Ethiopia has secured funding from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for its initiative to produce low-carbon sustainable aviation fuel.

The funding would help Ethiopia transition from the fossil-based jet fuel to the low-carbon sustainable one thereby realizing its aspiration for net-zero carbon dioxide emissions from aviation by 2050.

The production of the waste-derived aviation fuel uses resources herbal resources with low carbon emissions.

The production of the sustainable fuel aims to succeed in meeting the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) commitment to fly with zero emissions by 2050.

Ethiopia is among the 184 member states of the ICAO that agreed to a long-term aspirational goal of net-zero carbon dioxide emissions from aviation by 2050.

Ethiopia has participated in the 3rd Conference on Aviation Alternative Fuels (CAAF/3) in Dubai from 20 to 24 November. The funding came after Ethiopian officials held bilateral discussion with French Government on the sideline of the Conference.

State Minister for Transport and Logistics, Denge Boru and Director General of the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority, Getachew Mengistie have attended the announcement of the funding by ICAO in Dubai, UAE.
