Ethiopian athletes lit up the weekend across the world

Addis Ababa, February 27, 2023 (FBC) – Ethiopian athletes have registered victories at different athletics events held in various countries over the weekend.

On Saturday, Gudaf Tsegay stormed to the second-fastest women’s indoor 3000m performance of all time on an afternoon that saw World Indoor Tour titles won, and meeting and national records fall, at the final of the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold series in Birmingham, UK. She clocked just 8:16.69. Her compatriot and the 2021 world U20 5000m gold medallist Mizan Alem was second in 8:31.20 and Germany’s Konstanze Klosterhalfen third in 8:35.14.

In men and women races, Ethiopians athletes also claim victories in the 2023 Osaka Marathon, held yesterday.

In the women’s category, Helen Bekele and Beyenu Degefa claim the first and second places respectively. Whereas,, athlete Hailemariam Kiros has won the men’s race.

Meanwhile, athlete Yasin Haji has won the Guadalajara Half Marathon men’s race, held in Mexico on Sunday. Fellow Ethiopian Hiwot Gebre-Kidan has emerged victorious in women’s race.

More Ethiopian athletes shone during the weekend across the globe, as Athlete Tsegaye Kidanu won the men’s half marathon in Atlanta, USA. Fellow Ethiopian athlete Selam Fetene took 3rd place in the women’s race.

Moreover, athlete Dadi Yami claimed top spot in the Castel Marathon men’s race held in Spain. His compatriot Lemi Dumecha also claimed the event’s second spot in the men’s race.

Also, athlete Muktar Idris won the men’s race in the Naples Marathon in Italy. On the other hand, athlete Yalemget Yaregal won the women’s 10km race held in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Over in South Africa, Ethiopia’s Emane Seifu Hayile took almost four minutes off the women-only world 50km record at the Nedbank Runified Breaking Barriers Ultramarathon, clocking 3:00:29* at the World Athletics Elite Label road race in Gqeberha on Sunday.
