Ethiopian Federal Police enters Mekelle to guard federal facilities, installations

Addis Ababa, December 29, 2022 (FBC) – The Ethiopian Federal Police has entered Mekelle City, the capital of Tigray region, to guard federal institutions, facilities and installations.

Pursuant to the Pretoria Peace Agreement, the federal police has taken control of Mekelle to protect federal facilities and installations administered under the federal government including airports, electric power stations, telecom facilities and banks so as to ensure sustainable services to the community.

It is stated that the Ethiopian Federal police has so far entered some parts in Tigray region to reinstate displaced people to their residential places and safeguard peace and security in the areas.

Press Secretariat of the Office of the Prime Minister , Billene Seyoum stated that the entry of the Federal Police has been carried out as per the constitution of the country.

Olusegun Obasanjo, AU High Representative for the Horn of Africa, Uhuru Kenyatta, former Kenyan President and the Horn of Africa Peace envoy and Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, Executive Secretary of IGAD, are in Mekelle, Tigray to take part in the official launch of the Joint Monitoring and Verification Mechanism.
