Ethiopian heritage stolen from Magdala restituted

Addis Ababa, January 6, 2024 (FBC) – Some historical artifacts looted shortly after the battle of Magdala between Ethiopian and British armies in 1968 have been returned to Ethiopia.

The returned historical artifacts include two silver-plated cup trophies,a horn cup, letters, a shield, and the hair of Prince Alemayheu Theodros.

The Ethiopian Ambassador in the UK, Ambassador Teferi Meles, handed over the heritage to the Director General of the Ethiopian Heritage Authority, Mr. Abebaw Ayalew.
Ambassador Teferi said that the recovery of the artifacts is a diplomatic victory for Ethiopia.

The Ethiopian Embassy in the UK, in collaboration with the Ethiopian Heritage Restitution National Committee and the Scheherazade Foundation, played a role in returning the artifacts.

The Government is said to continue its diplomatic efforts to recover the artifacts that were looted from Ethiopia, MFA Ethiopia said.
