Ethiopian, Mexican ambassadors discuss regional, multilateral issues

Addis Ababa, March 25, 2021 (FBC) -Ambassador Plenipotentiary and Extraordinary of Ethiopia to Kenya, Meles Alem, conferred with his Mexican counterpart, ERASMO R. MARTÍNEZ M., today.

The discussion focused on regional and multilateral issues of interest, according to Ethiopian Embassy in Kenya.

During the meeting, Ambassador Meles briefed Ambassador Martinez on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), the Ethio-Sudan border issue and the humanitarian operations in Tigray regional state.

Ambassador Meles noted Ethio-Mexican formal diplomatic relations commenced in 1949. In 1954, Emperor Haile Selassie became the first ever head of state from an African nation to pay an official visit to Mexico.

On the 22nd of June, 1954, a traffic circle in Mexico City was named “Plaza Ethiopia”, and in August 1980, a metro station in Mexico City was built and named Metro Ethiopia Station.

To commemorate Mexico’s assistance to Ethiopia during its occupation by Italy; Ethiopia named a center square in Addis Ababa “Mexico Square”.

Currently, Mexico is a non-permanent member of the United Nations’ Security Council (UNSC).
