Ethiopian Sugar Industry Group inks MoU with its Cuban counterpart

Addis Ababa, February 2, 2024 (FBC) – The Ethiopian Sugar Industry Group has entered into a memorandum of understanding to collaborate with its Cuban counterpart, Grupo Azucarero Azcuba, a state-owned sugar-producing entity.

This development follows the directives ensuing from a recent discourse between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) and the Vice President of the Republic of Cuba, Salvador Valdes Mesa.

The signing ceremony transpired on February 1st at the headquarters of the Ethiopian Sugar Industry Group, where the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Wayo Roba, and his Cuban counterpart, Mr. Francisco Rene Martin, affixed their signatures to the MoU.

The signing ceremony garnered the presence of dignitaries from the Ethiopian Sugar Industry Group alongside the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to Ethiopia, Jorge Lefebre Nicolás.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will facilitate a synergistic engagement between the two parties in the domains of research and development, production, capacity enhancement, the development of sugarcane varieties, technical assistance, biotechnology, technology transfer, and trade within the sector.

Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), it is anticipated that numerous activities will be undertaken to enhance the productivity of Ethiopia’s sugarcane cultivars. This includes bolstering biotechnology proficiency, augmenting the production capabilities of sugar factories, and enhancing proficiency in factory maintenance and operational management.

During his address at the signing ceremony, Mr. Wayo Roba expressed gratitude to Cuba for its readiness to impart its expertise in the sector and collaborate with his delegation.

Ambassador Jorge Lefebre Nicolá, on his part, pledged to fulfill all the anticipated responsibilities, ensuring the swift implementation of the additional technical aspects outlined in the MoU.
