Government calls on everyone to play a part in preserving, passing on values of Irreechaa Festival

Addis Ababa, September 30, 2022 (FBC) – Government called on everyone to play their part in preserving and passing on values of Irreechaa to generations to come.

Government Communication Service (GCS), in a statement, has extended best wishes to All Ethiopians on the celebration of the Irreechaa Festival to be celebrated on October 1 and 2 nationwide particularly at Hora Finfinnee and Hora Harsede.

Irreechaa is a national treasure with a paramount significance in strengthening multinational unity, brotherhood and solidarity among Ethiopians, the Communications Service said, stressing need to preserve and pass on traditional values of the festival to generations.

Irreechaa, a thanksgiving festival practiced for millennia among the Oromo people as a holiday to praise the Almighty God for transforming all the human kind from the rainy period to the brighter spring season, GCS said.

Irreechaa is not only a national treasure but also world’s intangible heritage inscribed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Irreechaa is observed by millions of attendants from all walks of life including women, men, children, young people and elders who dress in colorful traditional attires and beautiful consumes during celebrations.

The government has called on the entire nation to mainteain peace and unity while celebrating the festival.
