Government, partners delivering aid to 6.4 million drought affected people: NDRMC

Addis Ababa, March 21, 2022 (FBC) – Commissioner of National Disaster Risk Management Commission, Mitiku Kassa stated that the Government in partnership with various development partners is delivering humanitarian assistance to 4.6 million drought affected people in the country.

The current drought situation that is named La Niña has resulted in complicated climate change driven impacts in Ethiopia, Mitiku said.

In particular, communities in the south, southeast, and lowlands of the country have been affected by this climate change.

The federal government, partners and regional governments are providing daily assistance including food and non-food items to 6.4 million affected people.

Further adding that fodder is being provided in pastoral areas to prevent further damage to the livestock. He said,” In addition to providing daily assistance, water is also being provided to people and animals. Also work is underway to repair water facilities and drill emergency wells.”

To address the situation in a more sustainable manner the government has prioritized water-based response activities, Mitiku underlined.
