House of Federation Speaker welcomes IPU Secretary General
Addis Ababa, October 31, 2023 (FBC) – Chief Speaker of the FDRE House of Federation Mr. Agegnehu Teshager, has welcomed the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Secretary General Mr. Martin Chungong at his office.
During their meeting, both sides discussed about issues pertaining to IPU and Ethiopia’s future participation in the Union as well as the issues of mutual concern, Mr. Agegnehu said in a social media post.
It is to be recalled that the Ethiopian delegation, headed by Upper House Speaker Mr. Agegnehu, has attended the 147th IPU Assembly in Luanda, Angola, from 23 to 27 October 2023. During the General Debate of the Assembly, Mr. Agegnehu delivered a keynote speech on behalf of Ethiopia.
On the sidelines of the Assembly, Mr. Agegnehu also held a bilateral meeting with the Deputy Speaker of Federation Council of Russia, Inna Svyatenko, in Luanda, Angola. During the meeting, both sides reviewed the longstanding bilateral relations, issues of mutual interest, and further deepening the existing relations between Ethiopia and Russia.
The 147th Assembly was held under the overall theme of “Parliamentary action for peace, justice and strong institutions (SDG 16)” and provided a platform for delegates to deliberate, exchange views and galvanize parliamentary action in this area.
It is learned that the IPU is the global organization of national parliaments.
