Inquiry Board visits displaced people following law enforcement operation in Tigray

Addis Ababa, December 1, 2020 (FBC) –The State of Emergency Inquiry Board today visited displaced community members following the law enforcement operations held in Tigray regional state.

The inquiry board was established to look into the state of emergency declared in Tigray last month by the House of Peoples’ Representative (HPR).

Members of the board held discussion with displaced family members of the defence army and other people affected by the incident and sheltered in the city of Gondar following the treasonous attack by TPLF clique.

According to them, more than 80% of the displaced are women and children.

During their field tour to Mykadra, they gathered information about the horrific crimes committed against innocent civilians and also visited mass graves where 50 to 60 bodies were buried together.

According to them, the number of people massacred by the youth group called ‘Samri’ could see further increase than the previous estimates by media and human rights institutions.

In its preliminary findings released last week, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) estimated the number of people killed in the attack at 600 to the minimum and said “the number is likely to be higher still.”

In his discussion with the victims, Chairperson of the Inquiry Board, Lemma Tessema, said members of the board will work to help the government bring perpetrators of the attack to justice.

In Mykadra, members of the board also visited suspects arrested in connection with the massacre, according to the House of Peoples’ Representatives (HPR).
