IOM chief praises Ethiopia’s commitment on social protection, women affairs

Addis Ababa, October 9, 2023 (FBC) – The new Director-General of the UN Migration Agency (IOM – International Organization for Migration), Amy E. Pope has appreciated Ethiopia’s commitment on social protection and women affairs

That was disclosed during the meeting between Ergogie Tesfaye (PhD) Minister of Women and Social Affairs of Ethiopia and the newly appointed Director-General IOM, Ms. Amy E. Pope.

Minister Ergogie and the UN Migration Agency Director-General discussed briefly on challenges of migration issues and trends on current situation of migration and returnees as well as future support to mitigate the atrocities happened to vulnerable migrants.

During their talks, Ergogie, expressed her gratitude to IOM for the assistance on rehabilitation, psychosocial service and other various support that have been provided to Ethiopia in general and to MoWSA in particular especially with returnees.

The Minister added the support should continue on strengthen national returnees database, establishment of call center, having air time to alert the societies and provide a right based response to migrants with the support of IOM and partners.

Ms. Amy Pope, for her part, appreciated the commitment of the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs on social protection and women affairs since women are the one who are highly affected much more than others.

She also pledged that IOM would like to support Ethiopia in all possible ways.

The Minister and the IOM DG discussed ways to continue working closely on reintegration, job creation and different interventions on social protection to solve the challenge.

In her first-ever trip as the new Director-General of IOM, Ms. Amy Pope has arrived in Addis Ababa on Sunday. Since her arrival yesterday in Addis Ababa, the UN Migration Agency chief has met with IOM staff in Addis Ababa and the African Union Commission officials.

She is also expected to hold discussions with other Ethiopian government officials.
