IOM say efforts continue to uphold rights of migrants, providing socioeconomic reintegration support

Addis Ababa, March 14, 2023 (FBC) – International Organization for Migration (IOM) and partners working to uphold the rights of stranded and returning migrants and their communities as well as providing socioeconomic reintegration support, IOM Ethiopia said.

In its report released today via its website, IOM noted that over 473,000 Ethiopians returned home between 2018 and 2022.

Ethiopia continues to be a major country for mixed migration flows in the Horn of Africa, where climate change and conflict exacerbate the severe socioeconomic challenges faced by communities largely dependent on subsistence agriculture, the report says.

Ethiopia serves as a point of origin, transit and destination for mixed migration within and beyond the immediate region: to the Middle East through Djibouti, Somalia, and Yemen by way of the Eastern migratory route: to Europe mainly through Libya and Sudan via the Northern migratory route: and to South Africa through Kenya and the Eastern and Southern African countries along the Southern route.

The report mentioned that IOM is working with the Government of Ethiopia, migrants, MRP’ partners, and key stakeholders to uphold the rights and meet the protection needs of stranded and retuning migrants and their communities as well as providing socioeconomic reintegration support in home communities.
