MoLSA launches German funded project to support workers affected by COVID-19

Addis Ababa, February 4, 2021 (FBC) – The Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (MoLSA) in partnership with International Labour Organization (ILO) has launched a project to support domestic garment and textile sector workers and enterprises affected by COVID-19 pandemic.

The project will be implemented with $4.5 million financial support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

During the launching program, Minister of the Labour and Social Affairs Dr Ergogie Tesafye said due to COVID 19 pandemic, the world of work has been affected seriously and eventually posed challenge to domestic garment and textile enterprises.

The project would be crucial to support garment and textile workers and enterprises to continue to operate, retain their workforce and mitigate social crisis, she said.

Christof Weigelmeier, Deputy Head of Development Cooperation from the Embassy of Germany said the support offered by BMZ will strengthen cooperation between the two countries and can also prevent the negative effect of the pandemic on enterprises.

During the event, the overall objective and ultimate goals of the project were presented by Alexio Musindo, Director of ILO Country Office for Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia, Sudan and South Sudan.
