Oromia region say 30bn birr worth projects being undertaken in drought-impacted areas

Addis Ababa, April 3, 2023 (FBC) – The Oromia region Communication Bureau stated that various projects worth 30 billion birr are being implemented in the region to provide permanent solutions to drought-prone areas.

The Head of the Bureau, Hailu Adugna, said that the regional government has put in place a short-term and long-term plan to reduce the risk of drought.

He said that in the past few years, some areas of the region have not received continuous rains, so people were impacted by the drought.

Accordingly, citizens living in 10 zones of the region, mainly southeast Oromia, are vulnerable to drought.

Hailu mentioned that the regional government has been trying to provide these citizens with humanitarian support in various ways.

Apart from providing humanitarian aid to these citizens, the Official recalled that various projects are being implemented in drought-prone areas of the region to provide lasting solutions to the issue.

He stated that the projects aim to improve the livelihood of drought-prone people with water development at the center.

Hailu mentioned that the total cost of the projects is 30 billion birr, adding that the works are being done with close follow-up.

Apart from the efforts of government’s provision of humanitarian aid, various partners are contributing massively, it is noted.

The Regional Communication Bureau chief explained that besides to life-saving humanitarian aid in the drought-affected areas, the work is being done to save the cattle from serious damage, the official confirmed.

He mentioned that the current rain in the highly drought-impacted Borena zone is so important. Hailu also pointed out that the work of storing water is being done with the opportunity at hand.
