Over 2.6bn ETB obtained in 6 months from electric power export: EEP

Addis Ababa, January 24, 2024 (FBC) – In the first half of the current Ethiopian fiscal year, Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) revealed that it has amassed a sum of 12 billion 848 million 139 thousand 990 birr through electric power sales to domestic customers and the neighboring.

The plan was to accumulate a sum of 13.473 billion 246 thousand 943 birr through electric power sales in the first six months of the fiscal year, EEP revealed that it just racked up 10 billion 234 million 869 thousand 88 birr from local customers, and an additional 2 billion 613 million 270 thousand 902 birr from the export of power to neighboring countries.

The neighboring countries that bought electric power from Ethiopia were Djibouti, Sudan and Kenya, it is indicated.

The performance of the half year is 95.36%, Moges Mekonnen, Director of Corporate Communications of Ethiopian Electric Power, said in an interview with Fana Broadcasting Corporate’s Yohannes Derbew.

Mr. Moges further indicated that the targeted power generation for the first half of the current financial year was 10,788 gigawatt hours, and the actual production amounted to 9,549.2 gigawatt hours.

He noted a significant increase of 1,317.5 gigawatt hours, representing a 13.79% growth compared to the same period last year.

Mr. Moges reminded that the planned sale of 8,505 gigawatt hours resulted in the successful sale of 7,788 gigawatt hours to both local and foreign consumers. This performance reflects an 8.5% increase compared to the same period last year, he said.
