PM launches construction of Jimma-Chida road project

Addis Ababa, February 23, 2021 (FBC) –Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has presided over the launch of construction of the Jimma-Chida asphalt concrete road project.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Demeke Mekonnen, and other members of the cabinet attended the ground-breaking ceremony held this morning in Chida town, Konta special woreda.

The contract for the 80km road project was awarded to China Tiesju Civil Engineering Group Co, LTD and is scheduled to be completed within four years.

The road will be built at a cost of 2.4 billion birr to be covered by the African Development Bank (AfDB), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the government of Ethiopia.

As the region is coffee and fruit growing area, the construction of the road would help framers to supply easily their products to local and global markets, it was noted.

It will also connect Oromia and SNNP regional states, allow tourists to travel to Chebera Churchura national park and contribute a lot for the construction of Koysha hydroelectric power.

Once completed, the project would also help to exploit the untapped natural resources in the region by connecting Addis Ababa-Jimma-Bonga-Mizan road with Hossaena-Sodo-Arbaminch road.
