Prime Minister Abiy congratulates President Erdogan on his election victory

Addis Ababa, May 29, 2023 (FBC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has congratulated President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his re-election as the President of Turkiye.

According to reports, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan won Turkish election with 52.14% of vote over opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu, who got 47.86%.

In his congratulatory message, Prime Minister Abiy stated that he is looking forward to further strengthening the relations between Ethiopia and Turkiye.

It is to be remembered that on May 14, no candidate won the required 50% in the first round, triggering Sunday’s runoff, although Erdogan took the lead with 49.52%. On that day, Erdogan’s People’s Alliance also won a majority in parliament.

It is noted that the first diplomatic contacts between Türkiye and Ethiopia date back to 1896 with the exchange of delegations during the rule of Sultan Abdülhamid II and Emperor Menelik II. Since then the two nations maintained their historical, diplomatic, economic, and cultural relations.
