Private companies engaged in digital commerce play a key role in Ethiopia’s digital economy: MinT

Addis Ababa, May 17, 2023 (FBC) – A workshop aimed to identify training and development needs in the e-commerce sector has been held in Addis Ababa involving participation of various stakeholders.

Addressing the workshop, Minister of State for Innovation and Technology, Huria Ali highlighted the role of the private e-commerce companies in advancing Ethiopia’s drive to build digital economy.

The private sector is poised to play in indispensible role in expanding digital trade and creating more employment opportunities, the State Minister said, pledging government’s commitment to bring the private sector to the forefront in this regard, she said.

Building a digital ecosystem is one of the foundations of the Digital Ethiopia 2025 strategy that includes developing and supporting digital businesses.

The government has been undertaking a wide range of activities to build a digital ecosystem, the State Minister indicated, citing the Digital Foundation Project underway with the support of the World Bank.

The project intended to benefit farmers, women, people with disabilities and rural communities will also help manufacturers, service providers, suppliers and consumers connect one another digitally, according to the State Minister.
