Rate of ICU admissions from COVID 19 rising in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, August 24, 2020 (FBC) – Number COVID 19 patients being admitted to intensive care unit are increasing in Ethiopia.

Medical Director at Millennium COVID 19 Treatment Center in Addis Ababa, Dr. Wuletaw Chanie exclusively told FBC that the facility is receiving only coronavirus patients who need critical care.

The Intensive Care Respiratory Support Unit is providing support for 20 patients in daily basis to the extent that is beyond its accommodation capacity, Dr. Wuletaw noted.

The rise of new coronaviurs infections is causing pressure in intensive care units, the Medical Director explained adding there are now 217 patinets in the Millennium Facility of which 44 are in severe condition.

The facility has so far delivered coronaviurs treatment service to 2,500 patients of which 22 have succumbed to the disease.

Four medical professionals working in the center has so far contracted the virus, he said.

Dr. Wuletaw called up on the community to avoid negligence and stick to precautions vital to curb the spread of the pandemic.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Ethiopia surpassed 40,000 mark, according to the Ministry of Health.
