Shadey Festival underway in Sekota town in the presence of DPM 

Addis Ababa, August 22, 2022 (FBC) – The celebration of the Shadey Festival is underway in Sekota town attendance of high level government officials including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Demeke Mekonnen and Chief Administrator of the Amhara Regional State, Yilkal Kefale.

Guests from several parts of Ethiopia are participating in the Festival. Ashendye is a girls’ carnival celebrated in northern parts of Ethiopia in commemoration of the end of the fast of the Assumption of Saint Mary. 

Shadey also known as Ashendye festival is named after a long “Ashenda ” grass which girls tie to hang down from their waists in a fashionable pattern. The Ashenda grass has come to symbolize the religious festival, as dancing girls move their waists causing the leaves to shake in an eye-catching manner.
