TPLF invasion leaves 1.3 million citizens in Afar to need of immediate food aid

Addis Ababa, April 19, 2022 (FBC) – The National Disaster Risk Management Commission (NDRMC) said the terrorist TPLF invasion of the Afar State left more than 1.3 million citizens to need of immediate food aid.

NDRMC Public Relation Head, Debebe Zewde told The Ethiopian Press Agency (EPA) that the citizens in need hail from 21 districts while more than 645,000 were displaced from their living areas due to TPLF’s belligerence. Out of the total displaced of 645,000 citizens, 336,000 of them have been living in 16 refugee camps while the remaining ones are living in the community.

Debebe further noted that the rebellious group has caused immense damages in six districts, namely Aba’ala, Megale, Koneva, Dalol, Erbiti, and Berhalie of Kilbeti of the Afar State. Particularly, the flaring up of sporadic conflict in Aba’ala and Erbiti districts are the main causes of increasing the displaced citizens.

“The conflict is not only increasing the displaced citizens but also the main hindrance to providing the necessary humanitarian support to the needy.”

According to EPA, 90,200 quintals of food items were distributed for 538,000 needy citizens in the first path. In the second path, 20,630 quintal food was distributed for 126,000 citizens while providing food has continued for the remaining ones.

As to Debebe, the commission distributed 4,031 nutritious food to address over 7,000 IDPs in Semera town while 10,500 additional food was distributed for 70,066 beneficiaries in zone two. Equipment for food preparation, dining and waste disposal collected from the government and partners have been provided for 58,597 beneficiaries.

Currently, there are 19 water tankers in different areas to provide potable water for the displaced citizens. About four nutritious partners and 30 movable health and nutrition groups have been working in the area, the head remarked.
