UNDP pledges support to rebuilding, rehabilitation of conflict-affected areas

Addis Ababa, December 2, 2022 (FBC) – The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has given its undertaking to provide all the necessary support and cooperation to rebuild conflict-affected areas in Ethiopia.

The FDRE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Demeke Mekonnen, held a discussion with the administrator of UNDP, Achim Steiner, at his office earlier today.

At the meeting, DPM & FM Demeke explained the current situation in the northern part of Ethiopia and the government’s determination to fully implement the peace agreement.

He also explained that the Ethiopian government has directed the main focus areas of reconstruction, humanitarian assistance and accountability into action.

Demeke thanked UNDP for its partnership when Ethiopia was under undue pressure and in a difficult situation in the last two years.

The DPM & FM said that a special committee has been set up by the Ethiopian government to rebuild the areas affected by the conflict and to support the community.

In some areas, education, electricity, telecommunication and other services have been restored, according to Spokesperson Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia.

Demeke also called on the UNDP to stand by the Ethiopian government in backing the rehabilitation of the conflict affected areas.

UNDP chief, Achim Steiner, on his part, appreciated the Ethiopian government’s determination to end the conflict in the northern part of the country through a peace agreement.

He affirmed that his organization will provide all the necessary support and cooperation to rebuild the conflict-affected areas.

The UNDP administrator also confirmed that UNDP will facilitate and draw the attention of other partners to assist the reconstruction process.
