Heads of State, gov’t to converge in Nairobi next week for AFSH Summit

Addis Ababa, April 30, 2024 (FBC) – The heads of state and government from the African continent are scheduled to convene in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, for the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health (AFSH) Summit 2024 next week. The Summit will be held from 7th to 9th May 2024.

The summit aims to bring together a diverse array of stakeholders, including policymakers, scientists, representatives of farmer organizations, private-sector entities, development agencies, civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, scholars, and the media.

The primary objective of the summit is to underscore the critical role of fertilizer and soil health in driving sustainable, pro-poor productivity growth within African agriculture. Participants will work towards reaching a consensus on an African Fertilizer and Soil Health Action Plan, as well as the Soils Initiative for Africa. Additionally, a 10-year Action Plan is expected to be endorsed, outlining concrete recommendations for actions to be taken by African leaders and stakeholders over the next decade.

The Action Plan is poised to provide a strategic focus for the implementation of new policies and investments that will empower farmers to actively contribute to the restoration of soil health. This initiative ultimately aims to boost yield responses and enhance the profitability of fertilizers.

Furthermore, the Action Plan is anticipated to receive endorsement from key private and public sector partners across all African countries, alongside pivotal documents such as the Nairobi Declaration, the 10-year Action Plan, the Soil Initiative for Africa (SIA), and the Mechanism for financing the Action Plan during the post-Summit implementation process, as per a press note issued by AU..
