AGRA hands over a flagship program document to Ministry of Agriculture

Addis Ababa, August 16, 2022 (FBC) – Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) has delivered a flagship program document to the Ministry of Agriculture.

During the handover ceremony, Ayele Gebreamlak, AGRA Ethiopia program officer said, AGRA in Ethiopia was on building key systems of service delivery to smallholder farmers, supporting the development of evidence based policies to create an enabling environment and enhancing execution capacity of the ministry of Agriculture and affiliate intuitions. 

“These interventions have contributed to catalyzing sustainable and inclusive agriculture transformation by increasing incomes and improving food security of 1.8 million smallholder farmers.” 

The Ministry of Agriculture requested AGRA to support the development of five flagship programs for Ethiopia. Based on this, AGRA responded to this request by developing the three Flagship programs. Those are National wheat flagship program, National rice flagship program and oilseed and animal feed program.

Hailemariam Desalegn, the former prime minister and AGRA board chairman, said AGRA has played a great role in Africa as well as in Ethiopia to transform agriculture and food security. AGRA has facilitated and coordinated the technical committee and support the resource mobilization to develop the flagship program in Ethiopia. The government of Ethiopia has implemented this program with a prospective in accordance with the ten year perspective plan. The document is also comprehensive. 

Minister of agriculture, Oumer Hussein said   I am grateful to all for being with us on these occasions to handover the three agricultural commodities flagship program to be implemented with financial and technical support of AGRA. AGRA has been our development partner working in the agriculture development sector to help our effort to transform the agriculture system and increase productivity and income of smallholder farmers.

Lastly, the minister stated that, “we seek to enhance financial and technical support from our development partners and active participation of the private sectors and AGRA also helps the three agricultural commodities flagship program by materializing it.
