Embassy expresses dismay on Sudan Tribune January 04 report

Addis Ababa, January 6, 2020 (FBC) – The Embassy of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia expresses its dismay on the unsubstantiated news report published on Sudan Tribune on January 04, 2021 that wrongly claims the deployment of more Ethiopian troops on the border areas to prevent people from crossing to Sudan.

The Embassy would like to state that the law enforcement operation by the Government of Ethiopia in Tigray region has been successfully completed after the Ethiopian National Defence Forces took full control of the region.

Currently the Government is engaged in the process of policing activities aimed at apprehending the criminal elements and ring leaders of Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

An interim regional administration is established and the Government has turned its attention towards rebuilding and reconstructing infrastructure deliberately destroyed and vandalised by the TPLF.

Moreover, the Government is also providing humanitarian assistance to the people affected by the Law enforcement operation and preparations has been completed to repatriate and resettle Ethiopians who entered Sudan.

The news report citing unknown eyewitnesses, claims fighting in the region is “triggering new waves of refugees” and the Ethiopian army has deployed forces, built fences and conducts patrols to prevent refuges from crossing the borders is erroneous, the embassy stated.

Furthermore, the report mentions an inflated number of refugees have crossed the border in to Sudan while the official record with the UNHCR shows otherwise. Against ethics of journalism, the report only used a partial source which could be a fugitive without approaching the government.

The Embassy reiterated that such unbalanced and baseless reports aimed to discredit and tarnish the image of the government of Ethiopia will only serve to erode the reputation of Sudan Tribune by running the risk of misinforming the general public and painting a wrong image that does not purport to facts on the ground.
