Ethiopia envisions adorning Abay Gorge with lowland bamboo

Addis Ababa, June 9, 2021 (FBC) – Ethiopian Environment and Forest Research Institute announced a plan to cover the Abay Gorge areas ranging from Kere Goha to Dejen town.

Located on the boundary of Oromia and Amhara region, the Abay Gorge is a serios of gorges to a depth of some 1,500 meters.

A research that will serve as a roadmap for afforestation of the Abay Gorge has been jointly conducted by Ethiopian Environment and Forest Research Institute, Selale University, Debre Markos University and Forest and Climate Change Commission.

The gorge has encountered vegetation degradation due to continuous mining activities and deforestation so that the tree planning is intended to recover natural resources of the area.

According to the institute, the gorge with mainly planted with lowland bamboo trees and other indigenous plants.
