Ethiopia, Malta pledge to strengthen bilateral relations

Addis Ababa, December 7, 2023 (FBC) – Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Italy, Demitu Hambissa, held a discussion with Ian Borg, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Malta, in Valletta, the Republic of Malta.

In the course of their discussion, Ambassador Demitu highlighted the growing relationship between the two countries, recalling the various discussions between the Prime Ministers of the two countries and the visit of Ian Borg to Ethiopia.

These high-level engagements have played a crucial role in further strengthening the existing relationship between the two countries, the ambassador added.

Ambassador Demitu briefed the Minister about the current situation in Ethiopia, focusing mainly on the Trilateral Negotiations on GERD, the implementation of the Pretoria Peace Agreement, the Ethiopian Transitional Justice Mechanism, the all-inclusive National Dialogue process, and Ethiopia’s request for access to the Red Sea.

Ian Borg thanked the ambassador for the briefing and commended the existing relationship between the two countries. He expressed the importance of encouraging engagement between the business communities of the two countries to further explore available opportunities. He said the forthcoming Maltese trade mission to Ethiopia in March 2024 would be an opportunity to further this end.
