Ethiopians living in Germany contribute over 3 Million Birr to GERD

Addis Ababa, May 17, 2021 (FBC) – Ethiopians and Ethiopian Nationals living in Germany have contributed more than 3 Million Birr to the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

A webinar has been organized by Ethiopian Embassy in Berlin in partnership with the consulate general office in Frankfurt with a view to recognize the financial support from members of the Diaspora in Germany to the GERD.

Addressing the webinar, the Minister of Water, Irrigation and Energy Ministry, Dr. Seleshi Bekele briefed participants on latest developments regarding GERD and the ongoing trilateral negotiation on the dam.

Saying that the construction of the dam has reached 86pct, the Minister said the project is being carried out with greater participation of Ethiopians living all over the world.

Ethiopians all over the world have manifested unwavering patriotism in devoting their money, knowledge and labor for the construction of the dam, he stressed.

He reaffirmed Ethiopia’s unwavering stance to utilize its natural resources including the Nile River without affecting downstream counties.

Dr. Seleshi further called upon members of the Diaspora to continue their support for the construction of the dam thereby leave their legacy for the realization of a better Ethiopia.

Special Envoy and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ethiopia to Germany, Mulu Solomn, to her part extended gratitude to members of the Diaspora community for responding to the call from the government and donating money for the construction of the dam.

She further called up on them to maintain the participation in national development activities and safeguard national interests through continued public diplomacy and other mechanisms.
