EU provides €33mln to support conflict-ravaged schools in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, November 21, 2022 (FBC) – European Union (EU) has provided 33 million Euros to support schools damaged by the conflict in northern Ethiopia.

More than 8,500 schools in conflict affected areas have been damaged by as additional 1,500 institutions are still out of services for they were vandalized during the war.

According to EU Ambassador to Ethiopia, Roland Kobia, close to 2 million children are deprived of education in the conflict affected areas. He stressed need to utilize the peace agreement for bringing the children back to school.

The financial support will be used to reconstruct 60 schools, undertake school feeding and restore other essential education services to conflict affected schools. It is stated that 80,000 students will benefit from the support.

EU has signed agreement with WFP and UNICEF to rebuild conflict affected areas. UNICEF, with €26.8 million from EU, will rebuild and rehabilitate 60 schools, benefitting around 80,000 children. With €6.2 million from EU, WFP shall provide nutritious school meals to 50,000 children.
