Prior to the launch of the 2023 seedling planting, Ethiopia’s Ministry of Agriculture announced in April that the country has planned to plant 6.3 billion trees during the current [5th round] Green Legacy planting season.

Out of the total trees to be planted, the Ministry said 45 percent are aimed to boost the forest coverage while 55 are tailored to integrated agriculture practices and horticultural purposes.

The Green Legacy Initiative led tree planting drive has been significantly contributing to the efforts underway to ensure food security besides reinforcing the water and soil conservation activities, the Ministry said.
