International Mother Language Day celebrated in Addis Ababa 

Addis Ababa, February 22, 2022 (FBC) – International Mother Day was celebrated with various events in Addis Ababa at the Headquarters of the UN Economic Commission of Africa yesterda.

Representatives of the UN and other international organizations, resident Ambassadors of several countries, high level officials and scholars attended the event.

UNESCO Ethiopia Country Director Yumiko Yokozeki, in her opening remarks, said that 4 out of every 10 children in the world have access to education in their mother language.

Saying that learning in mother language is a right for everyone, the Country Director said UNESCO is committed to improve the situation.

Emerging digital tools help promote mother tongue and enhance communications among diverse communities in the world, she noted.

State Minister of Culture and Sports Ministry of Ethiopia, Ambassador Mesfin Cherinet said that Ethiopia has enabled every child to get primary education in its mother tongue. 

Ambassador Mesfin indicated that as a country with rich linguistic and cultural diversity Ethiopia is using 55 mother tongues in schools and day to day activities. 

The event was organized by the Embassy of Bangladesh in partnership with UNESCO.
