Mayor unveils a plan to increase Addis Ababa’s greenery coverage to 30pct

Addis Ababa, July 4, 2023 (FBC) – Mayor of Addis Ababa, Adanech Abiebie announced activities to increase greenery coverage of the city to 30pct in the coming three years.

The assertion by the mayor came at a time when the city administration launched a campaign to plant 1 million saplings in a day involving participation of members of the municipal peace army and security forces during this rainy season.

The mayor said more than 100,000 trees has been planted so far in participation of members of the Federal Police, Addis Ababa Police, Code Enforcement, Fire and Emergency Prevention, Peace Army and religious leaders.

The forest coverage of the city has increased to 15pct from 2.8pct in the last four years, the mayor indicated, saying that 17 million seedlings will be planted till the end of this rainy season.

In the coming three years, 50 million trees will be planted in line with the plan set increase the greenery coverage of the capital to 30pct thereby ensuring a more attractive and livable city, according to the mayor.

More than 17,00 members of the municipal peace army and security forces have participated in today’s tree planting session, according to Mayor Office of Addis Ababa.
