Non-Aligned Movement key to strengthening South-South cooperation: MoFA

Addis Ababa, July 6, 2023 (FBC) – The State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, Ambassador Mesganu Arga, addressed the Ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan.

In his address, Ambassador Mesganu hailed the NAM as a key multilateral platform to strengthening South-South cooperation in the face of evolving and complex global challenges.

As a founding member of NAM, Ethiopia remains committed to the principles of the Movement that promote shared interests and aspirations, he added.

As global commitments for granting debt relief and climate finance continue to fall short of expectations, Ambassador Mesganu said, reinvigorating multilateralism that safeguards the interests of developing countries is not a choice rather a necessity.

He also underscored that in line with the principle of shared but differentiated responsibilities and the Paris Agreement, the international community has the solemn duty to support resilience capacity of African States, particularly those under post-conflict recovery in their efforts to mitigate the drastic effects of climate change.

In this regard, the State Minister stressed the nation-wide and massive afforestation and reforestation programs under the rubric of the Green Legacy Initiative.
