Donors urged to scale up support amid mass influx of refugees in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, November 23, 2023 (FBC) – Refugees & Returnees Service of Ethiopia (RRS) and UNHCR – the UN Refugee Agency briefed donors on the current refugee situation in Ethiopia, emphasizing the urgent need for the escalating emergencies due to conflict and flooding.

During the briefing, RRS Director General, Ms. Teyiba Hassen stressed on the importance of allocating the much-needed resource by donors and funders and effective engagement of partners to manage the increasing refugee operation in Ethiopia.

The RRS DG also informed the gathering that the issuance and renewal of the highly anticipated IDs and Civil Registration (CR) services to urban refugees has resumed as of 20 November 2023.

Regarding preparations for the upcoming GRF 2023, Ms. Teyiba said the government of Ethiopia is due to announce new pledges. She also reaffirmed her government’s unwavering commitment to implementing the pledges with the hope that adequate support would be secured from donors and partners.

Teyiba mentioned that though the operation is challenging, her institution is working in collaboration with partners to respond to the emergencies resulted from refugee influx from Sudan and flooding in the Melkadida operation.
