IOM reaffirms support to Ethiopia’s efforts on migration governance

Addis Ababa, December 19, 2023 (FBC) – The UN Migration Agency (IOM – International Organization for Migration) reaffirmed its dedication to assisting Ethiopia in its endeavors to combat irregular migration and facilitate the reintegration of returning migrants.

This commitment was expressed during a meeting between Ms. Huria Ali, the Minister of State for Women and Social Affairs, and Abibatou Wane, the Chief of Mission for IOM Ethiopia.

The discussion primarily centered around strategies to prevent irregular migration, as well as initiatives to reintegrate and provide resettlement support for returning migrants, with a particular focus on vulnerable populations within society.

During the meeting, Minister of State Ms. Huria emphasized the Ethiopian government’s dedicated efforts to prevent irregular migration and facilitate the successful reintegration of returning migrants.

She highlighted that the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs (MoWSA) has implemented several programs aimed at supporting vulnerable segments of society. Ms. Huria urged the UN Migration Agency to lend its support to these initiatives.

In response, Abibatou Wane expressed the commitment of the International Organization for Migration to provide the required assistance in preventing irregular migration and facilitating the reintegration of returnees.

Both parties agreed to collaborate closely in order to achieve these goals, it is indicated.

The UN Migration Agency observed International Migrants Day in Ethiopia on Monday through a Migrant Festival, which gathered migrant- and diaspora-owned businesses across the country, as well as people supported by IOM with livelihood and training, Government Ministries, and other partners.

The festival, the first of its kind in Ethiopia, was attended by IOM staff, people the organization supports, and partners from the Ethiopian government, the humanitarian sector and the diplomatic community, and celebrated a rich tapestry of experiences, showcasing that people on the move can be economic drivers, job providers and business owners.

In his message on the International Migrants Day 2023, the UN chief António Guterres stated, “On International Migrants Day, we highlight the urgent need for safe migration governance rooted in solidarity, partnership, and respect for human rights.”

According to him, migration enables millions of people to improve their lives, but poorly governed migration is a cause of great suffering.

A more humane and orderly management of migration can benefit all, including communities of origin, transit and destination, Mr. Guterres added.
