PM Abiy’s meeting with Chancellor Scholz fruitful to cement Ethiopia-Germany ties: Advisor

Addis Ababa, November 20, 2023 (F BC) – Foreign Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister, Ambassador Taye Atske Selassie, stated that the bilateral meeting held between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) and Chancellor Olaf Scholz has been fruitful to cement the existing bilateral relations between Ethiopia and Germany.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Chancellor Olaf Scholz exchanged views on bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interest, and explored ways of elevating the cooperation between the two countries particularly in the economic, trade and investment areas.

Ambassador Taye disclosed the two leaders discussed the ways to attract German investments to Ethiopia particularly in the areas of energy and fertilizer production. The leaders have identified potential areas and opportunities in Ethiopia that are suitable for German investments, the Advisor said.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed briefed the Germany’s Chancellor on the measures taken to bring an end to the conflict, the progress of the peace initiative and government’s continued commitment to ensure lasting peace in Ethiopia, Ambassador Taye indicated.

Regarding regional security issues, the Prime Minister assured the German Chancellor of Ethiopia’s readiness to play its role in addressing the situation in Sudan, the Advisor said.

Ambassador Taye said the trade relations between Ethiopia and Germany is extensive. Ethiopia is exporting coffee, flower and textile products to the Germany market while machineries, chemicals and other industrial inputs are the major imported items, according to Ambassador Taye, who said the discussion was fruitful to enhance the cooperation between the two countries in the areas of economy, investment and trade.

Ethiopia and Germany have been enjoying close cooperation on matters of climate change, energy, education, regional peace and security.
