Nation inaugurates a 4.3M Birr solar power plant in Somali

Addis Ababa, October 8, 2020 (FBC) – Minister of Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy, Dr. Seleshi Bekele along with President of Somali Region Mustefa Mohammed inaugurated a solar power plant built at a cost of 467,000 USD in Korele town.

The newly inaugurated solar micro-grid electric power plant, the first of its kind out of the 12 pilot projects in the country, is capable of generating 325 Kilowatt electric power.

Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy announced that the country has been installing 11 more micro-grid solar power plants in seven regions excluding the one which has been already inaugurated.

According to Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy, the budget of the installation of the micro-mini power grid projects are being carried out with the budget secured from the Wold Bank and the Ethiopian government.

Up on completion, the twelve solar power grids have a capacity to generate an aggregate of 3,800 Kilowatt electric power energy, the ministry said.

On the inaugural ceremony, Dr. Seleshi Bekele said that Ethiopia is working to address 250 rural localities with micro-grid solar electric power under the National Electrification Program.
