Teyiba Hassen appointed as new DG of RRS

Addis Ababa, July 24, 2023 (FBC) – FDRE Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has appointed Ms. Teyiba Hassen as the first female Director General of Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS).

Prior to this assignment, Ms. Teyiba has been Deputy Director General of RRS, it was indicated.

Experienced with the complex and demanding nature of the refugee operation in Ethiopia, the new RRS chief has first-hand account to effectively administer the refugee response in the country, RRS said.

It is also learned that she was entrusted with different responsibilities ranging from Mayor of Shashemene town to the Deputy President of Oromia regional state and Social Affairs Advisor to the Prime Minister.

The DG took the top job at a time when Ethiopia is hosting more than one million refugees and asylum seekers despite the ever dwindling humanitarian and development support from the international community, donors and partners. As such, she is tasked with leveraging efforts to manage the complex refugee response in the volatile Horn of Africa region.
